When an addict says he loves you, smile at him. Take his dry, cracked hand and tell him you love him more. Do not speak of the pain that he is causing you both. Drown out the unspoken words with his favorite songs until he no longer feels.
When an addict breaks down, cry with him. Even when he can’t find his own tears. He will yell and scream and curse and blame this all on you. You are not a storm.
When addict stumbles into bed past one in the morning, toss and turn in silence and soak in the smell of his bitter body next to you. Remember. You are holding a corpse that is still breathing.
